How to Win

Control the majority of the fourteen Scottish nobles when the scenario ends, OR achieve a Sudden Death victory at the end of any Game Turn (all nobles in play, Edward II killed in combat for the Scots, or the crowned Scottish King killed in combat for the English).

Game End Trigger

A game year ends when both players have played all 5 cards, OR when both players play Event cards in the same Game Turn. Once a year ends, resolve the Winter Turn. The scenario ends at the final year (1305 for Braveheart, 1314 for The Bruce / Campaign), unless a Sudden Death victory occurs first.

End Game Procedure

  1. English nobles go home. Every English noble on the map moves to its Home Area (teleports from anywhere). If the Home Area is enemy-occupied, the noble defects to the Scots at current strength (swap to the blue block).
  2. Scottish nobles go home. Every Scottish noble moves to its Home Area. If enemy-occupied, the noble defects to the English (swap to red block). Bruce and Comyn each have two Home Areas; they only convert if BOTH homes are enemy-occupied (the new owner chooses which home to place them in).
  3. Moray's choice. Moray alone may decline to return home: he may stay where he is (subject to Castle Limit), or disband to the Scottish Draw Pool.
  4. Scottish King. The King may move to any Friendly or Neutral cathedral (Strathspey, Lennox, or Fife), remain in his current area (subject to Castle Limit), or disband.
  5. English disbanding. All English blocks in England must disband. Archers, Knights, and Hobelars in Scotland MUST disband (unless wintering with Edward I). English Infantry (incl. Welsh / Ulster) may remain in Scotland subject to Castle Limits, or disband. Nobles cannot disband. Infantry exceeding Castle Limits must disband (owner's choice).
  6. Edward wintering. If Edward I is in Scotland, he may winter there OR disband. Edward II may NEVER winter in Scotland. Edward I cannot winter in Scotland in two consecutive years, nor in 1306. When Edward I winters, ALL red non-noble blocks in his area ignore Castle Limit. CRITICAL: if Edward winters, the English get NO Feudal Levy and England begins next year EMPTY.
  7. Scottish disbanding. Wallace may move to Selkirk (unless enemy-occupied) and gain 2 steps -- free move from anywhere. Then disband any Scottish blocks exceeding Castle Limits (owner's choice). Nobles other than Moray cannot disband.
  8. Winter Builds (Replacement Points). Each Friendly area generates RPs equal to its Castle Limit (Scots add +1 if the area has a cathedral). Spend each RP either: (a) build 1 step on an existing block in that area, or (b) draw 1 block from the Draw Pool and deploy it there at Strength 1 (Scots only). RPs cannot be saved. English RPs can only strengthen infantry or nobles already in the area -- not deploy new units.
  9. French Knights check. If the Scots control 8 or more nobles at the start of Winter Builds, the French Knight block is added to the Scottish Draw Pool. Once drawn, it remains in play until eliminated. If drawn for an inland area like Lanark or Badenoch, deploy in any friendly adjacent coastal area instead (Castle Limits do not apply for this redeploy).
  10. English Feudal Levy. SKIP if Edward I wintered in Scotland. Otherwise: shuffle the English Draw Pool face-down, draw HALF (round up), and deploy those blocks at FULL strength in England.
  11. New cards. Shuffle the full 25-card deck. Deal 5 new cards face-down to each player. Advance the year marker; begin the next year.

Final Scoring

  • Noble Majority: Count the number of nobles each side controls on the board at the end of the final year of the scenario. The side with the majority wins. If Moray is dead or in the Draw Pool, there are effectively only 13 nobles in play.
  • Braveheart Tiebreaker: In Braveheart (1297-1305), a 7-7 tie is possible. If tied: the Scots win if Wallace is alive on the map; the English win if Wallace is dead or in the Scottish Draw Pool.
  • Sudden Death -- All Nobles: At the end of any Game Turn: if one side controls EVERY noble currently in play, they win immediately. Note: Moray must be dead or in the Draw Pool for England to win this way (he never defects).
  • Sudden Death -- Edward II Killed: The Scottish player wins immediately if the Edward II block is eliminated in combat (a black-cross block, permanently dead). Killing Edward I in combat does NOT trigger Sudden Death -- the block simply flips to Edward II.
  • Sudden Death -- Scottish King Killed: The English player wins immediately if the crowned Scottish King block (Bruce, Comyn, or Balliol once on the throne) is eliminated in combat. Black-cross block, permanently dead.
