Setup Steps

  1. Place game boards: Place the three game boards as shown in the illustration. For the first game, use the Family game rules with the alternative reverse side of the first game board.
  2. Choose player colors: Each player chooses a color and takes the playing pieces in that color, as well as one farmyard.
  3. Place starting hut and Family members: On each of the two building spaces on the farmyard, players first place a Wooden hut room tile and then one of their Family members in each of these rooms.
  4. Set aside remaining player pieces: The remaining playing pieces (additional Family members, fences and stables) remain in the bag or are placed to one side.
  5. Organize general supply: Sort the remaining house and hut tiles and the rest of the game components and place them beside the playing area.
  6. Prepare Round cards deck: Sort the blue Round cards according to the Stage of the game. Shuffle each small pile and place the piles on top of each other with Stage 6 at the bottom, finishing with Stage 1 on the top.
  7. Place green Action cards: Take the 4 green Action cards for a 3-player game and place them face up on the spaces to the left of the first game board. (3 players)
  8. Place green Action cards: Take the 5 green Action cards for a 4-player game and place them face up on the spaces to the left of the first game board. (4 players)
  9. Place green Action cards: Take the 6 green Action cards for a 5-player game and place them face up on the spaces to the left of the first game board. (5 players)
  10. Deal Occupation cards: Shuffle the yellow Occupation cards (removing cards not used for the current player count). Each player is dealt a hand of 7 Occupation cards. The remaining cards are put to one side.
  11. Deal Minor Improvement cards: Shuffle the orange Minor Improvement cards. Each player is dealt a hand of 7 Minor Improvement cards. The remaining cards are put to one side.
  12. Place Major Improvement cards: Place the 10 red Major Improvement cards face up on the Major Improvements board.
  13. Place Begging cards: Place the grey Begging cards face-up beside the playing area.
  14. Distribute Summary cards: Each player takes a Summary card and places it in their playing area.
  15. Solo: start with 0 Food: The player begins the game with 0 Food. There is no Starting player token in the solo game. (up to 1 players)
  16. Solo: choose hand and round card order: In the solo game, you may choose your starting hand of 7 Occupation cards and 7 Minor Improvement cards, and decide the order in which Round cards within each Stage enter play. (up to 1 players)
  17. Determine Starting player and distribute Food: Players choose a starting player who receives the Starting player marker and 2 Food. The other players each receive 3 Food. (2+ players)
