Lost Ruins of Arnak Gameplay Overview

Play proceeds over 5 rounds. On your turn you take exactly ONE main action, plus any number of free actions before, during, or after it. When you have no archaeologists left to place, or choose to stop, you pass for the round.
Actions
Dig at a Site or Discover a New Site
Send an archaeologist out onto the island to an unoccupied site space.
- Pay the travel cost shown for that site, usually a mix of arrowheads and compasses.
- Place one of your archaeologist figures on the site space.
- Resolve the site's reward. Discovering a NEW site first flips its face-down tile and reveals a guardian to deal with.
Play a Card
Play an Item or Artifact card from your hand.
- Resolve the card's effect, or use only its travel value to help pay a cost.
- An Item stays in your play area for the round; an Artifact's effect fires immediately.
Buy a Card
Acquire a card from the card row: pay its cost, then take the card.
- Buy an Item card: pay its coin cost.
- Take the Item; it goes to the BOTTOM of your deck, so you can draw and use it later this round (Arnak has no discard pile).
- Or buy an Artifact card: pay its compass cost.
- Resolve the Artifact's effect immediately, then keep the card in your play area.
Research
Advance up the temple track to unlock rewards and points.
- Pay the cost shown and move your magnifying glass and/or notebook marker up one row.
- Gain the reward printed on the row you reach. Your magnifying glass may never pass your notebook.
Key Concepts
- One Main Action per Turn: Each turn is a single main action plus free actions. Turns pass back and forth until every player has passed for the round.
- Travel Cost: Reaching a site costs the arrowheads and compasses shown next to it. Cards and effects can discount or cover part of a travel cost.
- Guardians: A guardian sits on the top space of each site. Overcome it by paying its cost; leave it, and at round end it inflicts a Fear card.
- End of Round: When all players have passed, take your archaeologists back, gain any Fear from guardians, then shuffle your play area into the bottom of your deck.
