Objective
Score 20 Victory Points (VP) in your favor, control Europe when the Europe Scoring card is played, or have the most VP at the end of Turn 10.
How to Play
Each turn consists of a Headline Phase followed by Action Rounds. During the Headline Phase, both players simultaneously select a card and reveal them; events are resolved in order of Operations value (higher first, USSR breaks ties). Then players alternate Action Rounds starting with the USSR. Turns 1-3 have 6 Action Rounds each; Turns 4-10 have 7 Action Rounds each. At the end of each turn, check Military Operations penalties, advance DEFCON status by 1, flip China Card face up if applicable, advance the Turn marker, and deal cards.
Tips for New Players
- Opponent events still fire: When you play your opponent's event card for Operations, the event STILL happens. You choose whether the event or your Operations resolve first. Plan around this — sometimes it's better to headline an opponent's card or Space Race it.
- Scoring cards must be played: You MUST play every scoring card you hold before the end of the turn. Holding a scoring card at the end of a turn loses you the game immediately. Plan your hand around this.
- Space Race discards safely: The Space Race lets you discard a card WITHOUT triggering its event. Use it to safely get rid of dangerous opponent events when you can't afford to play them.
- DEFCON is a weapon: The phasing player loses if DEFCON hits 1. You can play events that lower DEFCON during your opponent's action round (via headline timing or triggered events) to win. Be very careful about DEFCON at level 2.
- Coups in battleground countries matter: Coups in battleground countries degrade DEFCON AND count as Military Operations. Early game USSR often coups a battleground on the first action round to satisfy Mil Ops and degrade DEFCON to restrict regions.
- Control the DEFCON level: Lowering DEFCON locks out regions (Europe at 4, Asia at 3, Middle East at 2). This can protect your position by preventing opponent coups in those regions. USSR often benefits from lower DEFCON early.
- Realignment doesn't degrade DEFCON: Unlike coups, realignment rolls in battleground countries do NOT lower DEFCON and do NOT count as Military Operations. Use realignment when you want to attack without DEFCON consequences.
- China Card gives 5 Ops in Asia: The China Card is worth 4 Ops normally, but 5 Ops if ALL Operations Points are spent in Asia or Southeast Asia. This makes it extremely powerful for Asian influence or coups.
- Watch Military Operations: You lose VP for each Military Operations point below the current DEFCON level at end of turn. A coup in a battleground country is the most common way to satisfy this requirement.
- Europe Control is instant win: If either side achieves Control of Europe when the Europe Scoring card is played, that side wins immediately — regardless of VP totals. Protect European battlegrounds carefully.
